Rare earth magnets have been developed for four generations. The first and second generation is RE-Co permanent magnets, which is Ji Yongci Co. The first generation is 5type SmCo alloy ( SmCo5), and the second is 17type SmCo alloy ( Sm2Co17). As the scarce Sm reserves, Co and Ni are precious and strategic metals, rare earth permanent magnets of the first two generations have not been widely used, which is only for high-end military markets.

The third and fourth generation rare earth permanent magnet is the department of RE-FE-B permanent magnets. The third generation of NdFeB alloy ( Nd2Fe14B ), is currently the most widely used rare earth permanent magnets. The fourth generation is Sm-Fe-N alloy ( Sm2Fe17N3), and has not yet entered commercial production phase.

In 2010, Chinese rare earth consumption is 8.7 million tons, of which 53.8 thousand tons is in the field of new materials consumption. Rare earth permanent magnets consumption is 34100 tons, which occupies 67% of total consumption of Chinese rare earth’s new material and 39% of total consumption of Chinese rare earth.
